The Leag power plant operator in Lusatia says it wants to realign itself and become a leading producer of green electricity and green hydrogen in the future.
In addition to the lignite sector, three independent companies for business models for climate-friendly energy are to be created under the umbrella of a joint holding company. The energy company announced this on Monday after the supervisory boards approved a realignment of the group of companies.
Leag named the following three business models: modern, hydrogen-capable gas power plants and large-scale battery storage, photovoltaic and wind turbines as well as biomass activities. The concept should be further developed in the coming months, said CEO Thorsten Kramer. The phase-out of lignite is agreed for 2038.
Leag announced that the new corporate structure supports the rapid development of green business areas and their ability to be financed. At the same time, lignite mining and power generation can be guided along the legally anchored exit path by the end of 2038 in a socially and ecologically responsible manner. “This also includes a commitment to the company’s long-standing commitments to making the opencast mining areas usable again.”
The Greens in the Brandenburg state parliament were critical of the company’s restructuring. The parliamentary group questioned whether the planned reuse of the opencast mines would remain financially secure.
