Leading role for Martens in Barcelona women’s cup victory

Football star Lieke Martens has once again proven to be in top form. Just like in the won Champions League-finale, in the final of the Copa de la Reina there was a leading role for the Orange international in the service of FC Barcelona.

Barcelona are unapproachable in both the Spanish league and the Champions League this year. All 28 league matches were won and in those matches the Catalan team scored no less than 132 times. Only seven goals were conceded.

The Champions League was won with a 4-0 win over Chelsea two weeks ago, after which only the Copa de la Reina was missing for the treble. That cup was conquered on Sunday, thanks to a 4-2 win over Levante, with Martens again in the lead.

She prepared the first three Barcelona goals and thus laid the foundation for the victory. Barcelona is the first club to win the treble for both men and women.

Janssen also wins cup

There was also Dutch success in Germany. VfL Wolfsburg, with defender Dominique Janssen in the field, won the DFB-Pokal for the seventh year in a row. Extra time had to be taken to find a winner. Ewa Pajor scored the winning goal against Eintracht Frankfurt two minutes before the end of extra time.

Shanice van de Sanden remained on the bench at the German top club for the entire match.
