Recently, North Korea launched two short-range ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan. The United States, Japan and South Korea issued warnings to North Korea at the same time, and vowed to upgrade the cooperation among the three countries. South Korean President Yoon Suk-yue even landed on a U.S. submarine for the first time and lashed out at North Korea: “If North Korea launches a provocation, it will lead to the end of the North Korean regime.”
The South Korean Presidential Office stated on the 20th that the exact time and location of the U.S., Japan, and South Korea leaders’ summit is yet to be determined; however, Japanese and South Korean media quoted sources as saying that the trilateral leaders’ summit will take place on August 18 at Camp David, the U.S. presidential resort in the suburbs of Washington.
It is reported that this is the second meeting between US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yue after the G7 summit in May. It is expected that the three will meet in August to discuss how to deal with the “big brother” behind it – the CCP, in addition to discussing the threat of North Korea.
The danger of conflict across the Taiwan Strait is rising. Xi Jinping has recently repeatedly warned that China must be prepared for “great winds and waves and dangerous storms”. On July 21, 13 countries including the United States and Australia began to hold a two-week multinational joint military exercise in Australia to deal with possible threats from the CCP. These 13 countries include: Fiji, France, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Tonga, the United Kingdom, Germany and so on. More than 30,000 troops will participate in the exercise this year, making it the largest military exercise in 18 years.
The exercise will take place at multiple locations in Australia, including simulated land and air combat, as well as amphibious landing operations. The exercise is scheduled to end on August 4. The Philippines, Singapore and Thailand will participate in the exercise as observers.
“One of the most important messages China can draw from this exercise and all the activities that our allies and partners are doing together is this: We are very much bound together by the core values that many of us have among our nations,” U.S. Navy Secretary Carlos Toro said, according to the Associated Press.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles also said: “This will be the most important logistical supply exercise between Australia and the United States since World War II.” Australia has deployed more than 800 military vehicles for the exercise to land through a mobile dock.
Hal Brands, a senior researcher at the American Enterprise Institute, published an analysis saying that if the CCP carries out such an intolerable expansion, it will eventually push countries in this region under the leadership of the United States, and it is the CCP itself that has contributed to the establishment of the “Asian NATO”.
The article said: “What Washington can do now is to use the CCP’s coercion to reach a clear agreement-if war comes, turn the larger relationship between Australia, Japan and the United States into a strong strategic triangle. A”three plus one” alliance is being formed to defend Taiwan. Other countries, Canada, Britain, South Korea or the Philippines may also join next, and will become the core of a loose multilateral agreement to resist CCP aggression in this region.”
