An operation carried out by the Spanish Civil Guard and the National Police of Ecuador has resulted in the arrest in Spain of the two apparent leaders of the criminal organization The Tigueronesclassified as terrorist group in the South American country and known for the assault this year of a live television station, the authorities reported this Wednesday.
The arrests of the main leader of the organization, known by his alias ‘Commander Willy’, and his brother and second in the hierarchy, took place in the town of Segur de Calafell, in the Catalan province of Tarragonaaccording to a statement of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior.
Both arrested people were weighed down by international arrest warrant issued by the judicial authorities of Ecuador, and the Information Service of the Civil Guard, several Intervention Units of the Civil Guard and the Ecuadorian National Police participated in the operation. The investigation began after it was learned that the leader of the group had resided for years in Catalonia availing of false documentation.
Ecuadorian authorities attribute terrorism crimes to the group
According to the Spanish authorities, the Ecuadorian Government declared Los Tiguerones a terrorist organization “due to its ability to plan, coordinate, execute and take responsibility for acts of planned and indiscriminate violence against the civilian population”, among which they would be attributed the placement of car bombs in Ecuador and the shooting of the prosecutor who was investigating the assault on a television.
The shocking episode gained international attention at the beginning of the year, after a group of more than a dozen hooded armed men attacked the set of ‘TC Television’ while it was broadcast live an informative program. According to Spanish authorities, the leader detained in Tarragona “I would have given the order to assault” the environment.
The violent action, investigated for terrorism crimes, occurred after the ecuadorian president will declare the “emergency“due to the outbreak of violence experienced in the country.
