NEW YORK — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will join business leaders, political leaders and philanthropists — as well as celebrities including Hugh Jackman and John Legend — for this year’s edition of the “Global Citizen NOW” conference, in New York from April 27.
The conference will combine major announcements on policy initiatives with discussions on immediate actions that can be taken to address climate change, food insecurity, gender inequality and other issues.
“The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are all about building a just, equal and peaceful future, where all people have access to clean air and clean water. This is also the vision of the Global Citizen NOW summit,” Mr. Trudeau said in a press release.
“In New York, I look forward to advancing our shared progress and advocating for strong global commitments to support gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls everywhere.”
Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans said this summit will focus on “translating ideas into real impact.”
Leaders from Verizon, Cisco, Citi and Procter & Gamble will join philanthropic leaders from the Ford, Open Society, PepsiCo and Rockefeller Foundations to discuss how changes can be implemented.
Mr. Trudeau will take advantage of his visit to New York to address the Council on Foreign Relations, a non-partisan think tank. He will also have talks “with representatives of the private sector, investors and finance officials in New York,” the statement from the Prime Minister’s Office said.
In addition, Mr. Trudeau, who is co-chair of the Sustainable Development Goals Advocates Group, and his counterpart from Barbados, Mia Mottley, will convene a meeting of the Group “to take stock of the mid-term situation of achieving of the 2030 Goals and to raise the level of ambition in this regard before the holding of the SDG Summit in September 2023”.
