Leaders have agreed on a federal spending level of $1.6 trillion (1.46 trillion euros). This was reported by Mike Johnson, the Republican speaker of the House of Representatives, and Chuck Schumer, the Democratic majority leader in the Senate.
Broadly speaking, the deal includes $886 billion in defense spending and $704 billion in other spending, Johnson said.
It is now up to parliamentarians in both bodies to adopt concrete legislation in a timely manner that will prevent a shutdown. Funding for roughly 20 percent of government spending expires on January 19.
Opposition
This concerns, for example, expenditure for military veterans and on programs that must guarantee the safety of medicines and food. On February 2, the money for other expenses also runs out.
The agreement announced by Johnson and Schumer will almost certainly encounter fierce opposition from the right wing of Republicans in the House, writes The New York Times. They hope for sharp cuts.
