Nasser Zefzafi, leader of the Hirak protest movement, has been given exceptional leave to visit a sick relative.
Zefzafi left Tangier 2 prison on Friday, his father, Ahmed Zefzafi, told the news medium Al Omk. Under heavy guard, he briefly visited his sick grandmother in a private clinic in his hometown of Al Hoceima. It was the first time he returned to his city since his arrest in 2017.

Nasser Zefzafi, a 44-year-old former unemployed person who became the face of the Hirak movement, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2019 for “conspiracy to undermine state security”. Three co-defendants, Nabil Ahmijeq, Wassim el-Boustani and Samir Aghid, received the same sentence. These sentences were confirmed by the Court of Appeal in Casablanca.

On the International Day of Indigenous Peoples on August 9, 2023, five international human rights organizations, namely Amnesty International, Center for Victims of Torture, Freedom House, Human Rights Watch and POMED (Project on Middle East Democracy), issued a press release calling for the immediate and unconditional release of Zefzafi.
