‘Leader Boko Haram blew himself up during pursuit’ | Abroad

Shekau blew himself up in mid-May when chased by fighters from rival ISWAP, according to a person in the recording who claims to be Abu Musab al-Barnawi, the terror group’s leader. Two people who know al-Barnawi confirm to Reuters news agency that it is him. Islamic State in West Africa was previously part of Boko Haram.

Last month, Shekau’s death was also reported by The Wall Street Journal on the basis of, among other things, the intelligence community, after it was revealed earlier that week that he had been seriously injured in a suicide attempt. A similar reading was given in the newspaper of how Shekau died.

48-year-old Shekau has led Boko Haram since 2009. The extremist Islamist movement became known, among other things, for the kidnapping of nearly three hundred school children. Shekau has been described as one of the most brutal and effective terrorists in the world, sparking a religious war in Nigeria and three neighboring countries. The Nigerian government has wrongly pronounced him dead several times before.

Boko Haram is also accused of using children in suicide bombings. The group is blamed for many attacks and tens of thousands of deaths in Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad. Two to three million people have been displaced.
