(LEAD) Moon leaves for New York where he will deliver a speech at the UN

SEOUL, Sept. 19 (Yonhap) – President Moon Jae-in left for New York on Sunday to attend an annual session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

He will deliver a keynote address on peace in Korea and Seoul’s role in addressing global challenges, including the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and climate change, according to his office.

His five-day visit to the United States, which will also take him to Hawaii for an alliance event, comes as the South Korean people celebrate Chuseok, one of South Korea’s biggest holidays.

Moon will speak at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly at the headquarters of the international organization on Tuesday (local time).

He is expected to seek support for the Seoul Peace Initiative and reaffirm his commitment to increase the country’s contribution to the international community.

This year, in particular, the two Koreas mark the 30th anniversary of their simultaneous UN membership.

This Monday, Moon will attend the opening ceremony of the Moment ODD (Sustainable Development Goals) event with members of the K-pop group Bangtan Boys (BTS), the president’s special ambassadors for future generations and culture. .

Moment ODD is designed to help galvanize the campaign to achieve the UN-led goals adopted in 2015.

Moon and BTS plan to ask the world for close partnerships to resolve outstanding global challenges.

The Head of State will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres and his Slovenian and Vietnamese counterparts Borut Pahor and Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, respectively.

After two nights in New York, Moon will travel to Honolulu for the transfer of the remains of South Korean and American troops killed during the Korean War (1950-1953). It will award medals to independence activists under the colonial regime of Japan (1910-1945) who reside in Hawaii.

Moon will return to Seoul on Thursday, the day after the Chuseok holiday ends.
