May 4 (Reuters) – Derek Chauvin on Tuesday asked a Minneapolis judge for a retrial, two weeks after being convicted of manslaughter and second and third degree murder for the death of George Floyd, court documents show .
In a series of petitions to a judge, attorney for Derek Chauvin said his client was denied a fair trial, arguing that the prosecutor and jury had committed misconduct, that there had been misconduct. errors of law during the trial and that the verdict was against the law.
On April 20, a 12-member jury declared Derek Chauvin, 45, guilty of all three charges he faced.
This rare verdict against a police officer is seen as a milestone in the racial history of the United States and as a reprimand for the treatment of African Americans by law enforcement.
George Floyd died on May 25 after being held down for more than nine minutes by Derek Chauvin, his hands cuffed behind his back and the officer’s knee resting on his neck as he said he could no longer breathe.
