Le Pen invokes de Gaulle to “revive” institutions, despite history

france="" souveraine="" fustigeant="" au="" passage="" d="" son="" rival="" eric="" zemmour.=""> Bayeux (France) (AFP) – Marine Le Pen invoked on Tuesday in Bayeux (Calvados) General de Gaulle, whom his party had fought for a long time, to “revive” the institutions of the Fifth Republic and “revive a sovereign France”, criticizing in the process “displaced radicalism” of his rival Eric Zemmour.

“I choose, like (de Gaulle), the courage of action and join in its political legacy to see the rebirth of a sovereign, independent and proud France”, declared the candidate of the National Rally on the place of Gaulle in Bayeux , where the general spoke in June 1944 after the landing and then in June 1946 on the future Constitution.

“Our ambition for France is to reconnect with the founding principles of our Republic, a French Republic, to revive them and give them all their strength,” added Marine Le Pen, whose party has long opposed de Gaulle and was founded in part by former collaborators.

The far-right candidate hailed “the act of sovereignty” posed by de Gaulle in 1944 vis-à-vis the United States in particular. “Many (…) would gain by meditating on this sequence which has become allegorical on the non-negotiable authority of the Republic”, underlined the one who wants to include national preference in the Constitution.

Pleading for a president “who gives our institutions the basis of stability”, she reiterated her desire for a non-renewable seven-year term, proportional voting and extending the use of referendums.

Marine Le Pen assured that de Gaulle, who had opted for a majority vote, would have approved this “update” in the name of the “sovereign will of the people”.

In a nod to Eric Zemmour, she estimated that the country’s problems “will not find their solutions in division but in unity, not in displaced radicalism but in respect for institutions and even conveniences”. The polemicist also claims de Gaulle while affirming that Marshal Pétain saved Jews, denied in this regard by all historians.

Ms. Le Pen had earlier laid a wreath in front of La Croix de Lorraine, symbol of resistance, in Courseulles-sur-mer, telling the press that General de Gaulle “conveyed the hope of rebuilding” France.

“We have been fighting for 40 years precisely so that France does not give up sovereignty, does not give up this independence, does not abandon itself to deindustrialisation, to self-hatred, to the disappearance of its influence in the world “, she assured.

Marine Le Pen was speaking on the occasion of the 51st anniversary of the death of General de Gaulle, also celebrated by the LR candidates and the Prime Minister Jean Castex in Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises (Haute-Marne) where is buried the former head of state.

The LR candidate Michel Barnier estimated on BFMTV and RMC on Tuesday that with Marine Le Pen and Éric Zemmour “we do not have the same reading of history”. “I have never confused General de Gaulle with Pétain,” he added.

For “some, their reference to Gaullism seems a little artificial,” commented Xavier Bertrand, another LR candidate, on Europe 1.
