Le Pain Quotidien is temporarily closing thirteen branches in Belgium, including four in the city of Antwerp and one in Mechelen. The bakery / food store is said to be severely affected by the corona measures.

One year of corona severely affected the chain. Until today, Le Pain Quotidien had 24 cases across the country, but now barely eleven of them remain. Of the five stores in the city of Antwerp, only those on Mechelsesteenweg will remain open for the time being. The four others (Steenhouwersvest, Graanmarkt, Kievitplein and Leopold de Waelplaats) will close in anticipation of better times.

CEO Annick Van Overstraeten published after the consultation committee an opinion on the lack of government support and today sees itself compelled to act accordingly by closing a total of thirteen retail outlets indefinitely.

According to the CEO, Le Pain Quotidien has tried to the last minute to remain open to the customers, partners, suppliers and farmers who depend on the business. “The ambition was to get through corona without closing, but after a year of persistence we have to partially end that,” said a press release.

The bakery-restaurant group was founded in 1990 in Brussels by Alain Coumont. Le Pain Quotidien now has more than 200 stores in 21 countries on three continents.
