Jakarta –
Traffic jams in Jakarta are getting worse every day. The data even states that the level of congestion in the capital has touched a higher level than in 2019 or before the COVID-19 pandemic hit.
According to the Executive Director of the Institute for Transportation Studies (Instran) Deddy Herlambang, the main culprit for traffic jams in Jakarta is the large population of vehicles.
“All because of sales of LCGC cars and motorcycles which have continued to increase to date. Vehicles are increasing, but not in balance with the growth in the length of roads in Jakarta,” said Deddy when contacted. detikcomSunday (12/2/2023).
Deddy also touched on government policies that worsen traffic conditions in the capital city. According to him, the 0% tax facility for car purchases is also an unavoidable source of congestion.
“Vehicles have increased due to 0% tax car sales from 2021 until tax discounts until 2022, so when the PPKM is revoked these cars all go out to work,” said Deddy.
The government actually has the opportunity to reduce traffic jams that occur in the capital city. However, because there is no strict transport demand management (TDM), the balance between vehicle population and roads is not achieved.
In addition, the government is also considered to be inclined to issue policies that support the ease of use of private vehicles rather than encouraging people to use public transportation.
“Congestion also occurs due to the failure of the push and pull TDM program. There is no balance (balance) between limiting the use of private vehicles and attracting the use of mass public transportation,” said Deddy.
Unika Transportation Observer, Soegijapranata Djoko Setijowarno also expressed the same thing. According to him, the vehicle restriction program implemented by the government was not effective.
“There should already be restrictions on private vehicles in Jakarta, seeing the increasing number of private vehicles. It’s just that the government is not firm enough to restrain the rate of private vehicles, the ERP policy just doesn’t travel, 3 in 1 to odd-even doesn’t affect either, “said Djoko to detikcom.
