Lazio, six wins and we’re off again

Perhaps this is the best outfit for Lazio. Last season, the spectacular comeback of the Biancocelesti had placed them in a three-way title fight with Juventus and Inter … until March, the forced three-month break because of the Covid having overcome the incredible dynamic symbolized by Ciro Immobile and his 36 goals in Serie A (Golden Boot 2020). Now, after a more difficult start to the season which saw Lazio attend the second half of the table, Simone Inzaghi’s players have removed some pressure. They are reaping the rewards.

Raised to sixth place, tied with their friends Roma and Naples in fourth place, and two points behind Juventus, the Laziali remain on six straight wins. It is the best current series in Italy, and one of the best among the five big European championships, where only Manchester City (eleven victories), Monaco and Barça (seven victories) do better, Lille also remaining on six victories. Unbeaten in 2021, with a draw to start the year before these six consecutive victories, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and his teammates notably inflicted a 3-0 on Roma and won 3-1 at Atalanta.

Immobile remained a crazy trigger: fourteen goals, second best director in the championship two lengths behind Cristiano Ronaldo, tied with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Romelu Lukaku. “The most difficult thing happens, after having made up for all these points lost at the start,” said Simone Inzaghi at a press conference, after the last victory against Cagliari (1-0). With this very simple reflection when asked if it is possible to think about the title, while AC Milan has a nine-point lead: “Just don’t stop.” A victory at Inter, beyond confirming the return to the forefront of Lazio – who will also face Bayern in the knockout stages of the Champions League – would bring the Roman club four lengths from its opponent.
