The Manpower Director of the Ministry of National Development Planning / Bappenas, Mahatmi Parwitasari Saronto, said the Covid-19 pandemic had increased the unemployment rate by 2.67 million people to 9.7 million people with an open unemployment rate (TPT) of 7.07 percent.
“In the future, in 2021 we hope the economy can recover quickly with economic growth in the range of 4.5-5.5 percent so that it can create about 2.3-2.9 million jobs and TPT can fall into the range of 5.9- 6.5 percent, “said Mahatmi in the Religious Webinar Teraskita, Saturday (28/11/2020).

He added that this year the job opportunities created were limited and even tended to shrink because the working age population affected by the pandemic was quite large, where the number reached 29.12 million people or 14.28 percent of the working age population.
Of these 2.56 million people are unemployed, not the work force of 0.76 million people, are laid off or temporarily unemployed 1.77 million people and experience a reduction in working hours of 24.03 million people. “Not to mention there is a new workforce that enters the labor market as many as 2.36 million people. They have to compete for jobs with those affected by the pandemic,” he said.

Mahatmi said, before the pandemic hit the country, the unemployment rate was already what the government expected, which in 2019, the open unemployment rate (TPT) reached 5.23 percent. “However, with the pandemic that has an impact globally, many business actors those affected due to reduced demand so that they are forced to reduce their business activities, “he said.
