Layoff storm hits TikTok, 700 people want to be replaced by AI

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – TikTok has reportedly just laid off 700 of its employees in Malaysia. The layoffs mostly affected those involved in content evaluation operations.

TikTok confirmed the layoffs, but said the number was less than 500 employees. Launch ReutersTiktok also confirmed that hundreds of employees worldwide are expected to be laid off.

Sources said those affected received information about the breach by email on Wednesday (12/10/2024).

These layoffs are related to the increased use of AI for content moderation. TikTok uses a combination of human and automated discovery methods to review content on the platform.

“We are making this change as part of an ongoing effort to strengthen our global operating model in content moderation,” said a Tiktok spokesperson, quoted by Reuters, on Saturday (12/10/2024).

In addition, TikTok also plans to make more layoffs next month. One source explained that this happened with the aim of consolidating several of its regional operations.

Bytedance subsidiaries will invest $2 billion globally this year. The goal is related to platform reliability and security.

Meanwhile, layoffs are being reported in Malaysia as companies there face increased regulatory pressure. That is, the government requires social media to apply for operating licenses.

The operating license has been in place since last January. The government is aiming to register as an effort to combat violations in the internet world.

Social media monitoring is encouraged to be developed. Because reports in Malaysia say that there will be a big increase in dangerous content in 2024.
