The Democrats have failed to provide sufficient evidence that prompted former President Trump to storm the Capitol in January. That’s what Trump’s defense team said in the impeachment process.
On Friday, the fourth day of the trial, counsel for the former president argued why the Senate should not condemn Trump for his role in the storm. Five people were killed in the brief occupation.
Senators were allowed to ask questions to the lawyers and prosecutors during the session day. One of the counsel described the charges against Trump as a “ridiculous and heinous lie.” The impeachment process, according to the defense, is primarily intended to “eliminate a political opponent”. Trump’s lawyers took about three hours in total for the defense. They had been given sixteen hours.
The Democrats contributed tweets and videos earlier in the process that they say show that Trump, in his role as president, did have a share in the storm. By repeatedly rejecting the election results and labeling the ballot box as a fraud, Trump has incited his supporters, they say.
Twice impeachment procedure
Trump is the first president to face two impeachment proceedings. In the process currently underway, he has been charged with instigating an uprising in connection with the Washington storming. During the storm, parliamentarians gathered to confirm President Biden’s victory.
Last week, a majority of the Senate voted in favor of Trump’s trial being constitutional. This means that the former president can be tried and convicted.
A two-thirds majority in the Senate is required for a conviction. Because the Senate has 50 Republican senators, that means that a number of Republicans will also have to drop the former president. A ruling is expected in the coming days.
