Michelle Dim St. Pierre sued the creators for its release last week, demanding that a passage in which her mother is being interviewed by fake reporter Borat be cut from the film. She stated in her case that her mother was not aware that it was a satire, and that the clip was filmed to ridicule the Holocaust and Jewish culture.
In the film Borat visits a synagogue and has to let Dim Evans tell him that the Holocaust did indeed take place. The activist died after the filming of the film, maker Sacha Baron Cohen dedicates the film to her in the credits. He has always stated that with the film he wants to denounce the denial of the Holocaust. According to Deadline, he told Dim Evans very exceptionally immediately after the recording that it was a satire and that he himself is Jewish.
“The lawsuit is over,” a lawyer for the filmmakers told American media. Sacha Baron Cohen is deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Judith Dim Evans, whose compassion and courage as a Holocaust survivor touched the hearts of the millions who saw the film. Judith’s life was an impressive rebuttal to Holocaust denial, and with this film and its activism, Sacha Baron Cohen aims to further counter Holocaust denial. โ
