Lawsuit against courier services exposes abuses in the sector: “There is no such thing as free delivery”

PostNL and GLS work for parcels as part of a pyramid system. This works as follows: you order a package from an e-commerce company, such as Zalando or Bol.com. That company engages a courier company, such as PostNL or GLS, for the delivery of your package. Those courier companies, in turn, engage subcontractors again, and so the order ultimately ends up with the courier who will deliver the package to your door.

The problem with that pyramid system is that there could possibly be false self-employment. You get that if you are self-employed, such as a parcel deliverer, but work for one customer, such as PostNL. In that case, the parcel deliverer must be hired as an employee, because bogus self-employment is prohibited by law. In total there are 52 courier companies, including PostNL and GLS, that have come into the crosshairs of the court.
