Law restricting abortion in Florida goes into effect

Washington. A law that prohibits abortion after six weeks of pregnancy, one of the most restrictive in the United States, came into force this Wednesday in Florida, in what President Joe Biden described as a “nightmare” promoted by his rival and predecessor Donald Trump.

Trump often boasts that he allowed the Supreme Court to end the federal right to abortion in June 2022 and leave that matter in the hands of the states.

A decision that was possible because, during his term (2019-2021), the then Republican president tilted the high court towards the conservative side with the renewal of three of its nine judges.

“Today, an extremist abortion ban goes into effect in Florida, banning abortion even before many women know they are pregnant,” Biden said in a statement.

US Vice President Kamala Harris visits Florida, a state governed by Republicans, this Wednesday to give a speech in which she will criticize Trump.

Biden, 81, already traveled last week to this southeastern state, one of the most populated in the country, which voted mostly for Trump in the last two presidential elections.

Democrats are trying to make abortion one of the main issues in the November elections, hoping it will give them votes against Trump, 77.
