The initiative New York For All, is a proposed law that would create rules to protect undocumented communities from ICE.
And according to the assembly member, Karines Reyes: “It limits the powers of ICE with the state of New York and it doesn’t allow them to use our resources for the work they do of terrorizing and hunting down our immigrants. “
The goal is to prohibit both local and state agencies or authorities from collaborating with ‘La Migra’ and that the law protects immigrants regardless of politics in Washington for years to come.
“We both praise the immigrant community and front-line workers during the pandemic, we do not want them to live in fear of going to work, shopping, reporting a crime if they have to, looking for yesterday,” explains Reyes.
Additionally, it would prohibit ICE agents from entering non-public areas and government buildings without a warrant.
Assemblywoman Reyes elaborates on this: “Right now, they go into the courts, see the list of people who have sight that day, wait for them outside and pick them up. And that is not going to allow them to do that.”
Some New Yorkers are in favor of passing the law that helps a community that has come under attack in recent years.
A neighbor expressed: “Too much [miedo], enough to have depression and much more. And everyone has the right to come to this country and live with dignity. ”
Someone else added: “There are many undocumented people who are looking for it is their daily bread, to work to eat and they also contribute their benefits.”
And it would also prevent by law state and municipal government officials, including police and sheriffs, from using their resources to assist immigration.
“We know that the policy of many people in the police is aligned with them. We want to make it illegal for them to collude,” Reyes details.
The legislative proposal that was presented last week and will be discussed during the hearing after the state budget passes.
