Evangeline, 13, leaves her Christian fundamentalist family in Ohio to flee to New York. When Special Unit inspectors find her, they learn that she is pregnant and has chosen New York State because she would have the right to have an abortion. Her parents demand that their daughter leave with them, and bring the pregnancy to term. During the hearing, she reveals that it was her stepfather who got her pregnant and that he had been abusing her for years. A legal battle ensues between Unity and Carisi, who defend the young girl’s right to dispose of her body, on the one hand, and Evangeline’s mother and a surrogate from Ohio on the other, determined to prevent an abortion that they consider murder.
