As Olivia Benson successfully takes the final steps to adopt Noah, she reveals to the attorney handling the adoption process that the child is not from an unknown father. Noah’s biological father is Johnny Drake, aka Johnny D., an ultra-violent sex trafficker whom she arrested and whose trial is due to open soon. Johnny D.’s lawyer uses this information to try to get his client to acquit, claiming that Benson has gone after him the better to tear his son away. Amaro announces to Benson that he will take the exam to become a sergeant, but after a conversation with Tucker, Benson explains to Amaro that his superiors will categorically refuse to promote him. Annoyed, Amaro gives up the exam.
