The law that reduces abortion from 24 weeks to 15 in the state of Florida, United States (USA), was promulgated this Thursday by Governor Ron Desantis, and will enter into force on July 1.

Said law, in addition to reducing the time for the legal interruption of pregnancy, only contemplates the exception in case the mother is in danger or the fetus presents malformations. The cause in case of rape was not considered, limiting the reproductive rights of women.
For her part, the executive director of the Alliance of Affiliated Companies of the Planned Parenthood organization, Laura Goodhue, stressed that “by signing this cruel legislation, Governor Ron DeSantis is depriving people in Florida of the freedom to control their own bodies”.
The new legislation establishes that, in order to proceed with the interruption of pregnancy in the cases contemplated, two doctors must certify that said practice is necessary.
This law has been criticized by social and women’s organizations. “As established, access to abortion remains out of reach for many women in the United States,” said Risa Kaufman, director of human rights for that country at the Center for Reproductive Rights.
Abortion access is – and always will be – essential.

Days earlier, a Florida judge ruled that women must wait 24 hours before having an abortion, which can be a problem for those who have difficulties moving within the state or do not have access to several non-working days.
According to the executive director of the Marcha de Mujeres collective, Rachel O’Leary Carmona, “the Women’s Health Protection Law is exactly what we need to protect and expand access to abortion, but as long as there is obstructionism, Republicans will use it to block the policy Americans need.”
