On behalf of the Huesca Bar Association, organizer of the conference, the counselor and lawyer José Ignacio Alpín Azón intervened, who briefly reviewed the seven previous editions, which he referred to as a “path of learning and dissemination” of the mountain In this regard, he added that “mountains are not only a resource to be exploited, but we have to act as guardians of this natural legacy.”
Alpín closed his speech by telling attendees that these days should serve as inspiration so that “they continue to challenge us in the protection of the mountains.”
On behalf of the Jacetania Region, its president, Olvido Moratinos, intervened, ensuring that these days of law and mountains “are not just any days.” “Some of the issues discussed here have even become the basis for creating legislation in higher institutions such as the Cortes of Aragon or the State on issues such as the non-collection of ransoms or the regulation of youth activities,” he noted.
The mayor of Jaca, Carlos Serrano, closed the speaking session, for whom “Jaca and its municipality are a paradise of mountains and life. That is why we are here, defending the mountains, side by side with the rest of the public institutions and civil society,” he said, adding then that the Law and Mountain Conferences “are the best platform to strengthen the ties of all those involved.” in defending and caring for the mountains.”
Subsequently, the journalist, writer, mountaineer and popularizer Sebastián Álvaro gave the inaugural conference, recognizing that, for him, “it is a luxury and a responsibility to be here, defending the mountains.”
He spoke from experience and from the heart when commenting on some of the episodes of his long and fruitful life as a mountaineer. “I have been climbing mountains all over the world for more than forty years and I have been able to see their evolution and involution. And I am increasingly confident in being able to affirm that, even today, our Pyrenees exudes quality in every corner. And, therefore, we cannot allow it to become a scrap metal field within a few years. We fill our mouths talking about the processes of climate change and, it turns out, there are those who do not want to realize that we are already seeing this process and suffering,” he noted.
Finally, he gave the attendees some information for reflection: “we are eight and a half million hikers. With our attitude and example we must try to make reason win in the defense of a living, wild and natural Pyrenees.”
