Laver Cup organizers announce plans for Roger Federer
Roger Federer will be honored at this year’s Laver Cup on the first anniversary of his retirement from professional tennis, the event announced. This year the Laver Cup will take place in Vancouver from September 22nd to 24th.
On the first day of this year’s edition of the tournament, Federer will take to the pitch at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. On the court, Federer meets Jim Courier – the American tennis legend who interviewed the Swiss shortly after his career ended at the Laver Cup in London last year.
Also, on Friday 22nd, fans will have the opportunity to send their questions to Courier to ask Federer on the pitch. Also, at each session, two lucky fans will be chosen at random and given the chance to sit in the stands with Federer.
Federer had a “wonderful” farewell
Last September, Federer met Nadal for a doubles match as part of his farewell.
While Federer and Nadal competed together on the pitch, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray supported them from the Team Europe bench. After it was all over, Federer thanked everyone for the special farewell: “It was great.
I didn’t want it to feel lonely out there. It felt lonely for a second when they told me to go out, but saying goodbye to a team always made me feel like a team player at heart.
The individual games don’t really bring much, but I had a team that traveled around the world with me. It was great for her. So thank you to everyone who has made it work for so many years. It’s been incredible to be on this team, to play all these Laver Cups and it feels like a celebration.
I wanted it to feel like this – and it’s exactly what I was hoping for, so thank you. It should never have been like this. I was really happy playing tennis and spending time with my friends.
It was quite a perfect trip. I would do it again. “It was so much fun, was amazing, so many people cheered me on and you guys are here tonight, it means the world,” Federer said after retiring from the Laver Cup.
