Lauwersoog ferry port car bridge malfunction leaves vehicles stranded – RWS working on temporary solution

Due to a malfunction, the car bridge at the Lauwersoog ferry port cannot be used at the moment. Rijkswaterstaat (RWS) announced this. ‘Passengers can board, but vehicles cannot.’ The bridge, which is normally raised when there is no boat, is now hanging in the water.

RWS has called in a crane to still operate the bridge. “It is still unknown how long this will last,” says RWS.

The boat leaves from the Lauwersoog ferry port to Schiermonnikoog. A truck that was on the boat to continue its journey to the mainland had to be taken back to Schier because the truck could not get off the boat.

The moment when things went wrong was captured on the webcam. Just as the Rottum ferry appears to be sailing away, the car bridge falls down.

Rijkswaterstaat lat Omrop Fryslân know that the problems will continue this weekend anyway. New parts need to be ordered, but it is unclear when they will arrive.

The (broken) car bridge is temporary. The actual car bridge was removed in December last year for major maintenance. The renovated parts will be replaced at the end of 2024.
