Lauris Reiniks goes to prison: “Feelings were like a horror movie”

In the middle of August, Lauris Reinik went to Latvian prisons – he stayed there to record a video for his song “Ventilate the Head”. Today, this video has finally been submitted to fans and the public.

The idea of filming in prisons is his own, because he dreamed of a video script. “I first addressed an award-winning director, but he had absolutely no idea, so I gave up on the idea of a video. But then one night I dreamed of a story, which I would turn into a clip script, ”Lauris told the magazine” Kas Jauns “, who looked for director Aija Strazdiņš, who started working together with the cameraman Ivo Skanstiņš.

“The main problem was finding a prison where you could film. I found out on the Internet that Brasa Prison closed four months ago. I contacted the Prison Administration, who were very surprised because I am the first musician to show such interest. But they were very responsive and welcoming – we were able to film not only in the empty Brasa prison, but also in Olaine prison, ”says Reiniks.

How did Lauris feel when he was in prison? “It simply came to our notice then. In Brasa Prison, the feeling was like a horror movie. As it was built 100 years ago, it also looked that way – gloomy, damp, narrow. Instead, we found two mint toothpastes, a prisoner’s homemade necklace, with the Russian name hleb (‘maize‘). That was interesting. Brasa Prison was empty, we could feel free and undisturbed, while in Olaine Prison we filmed with the prisoners, for whom our appearance was a great surprise and event.

Because when we went out to smoke in our orange clothes that prisoners wear in America, it was at that time that the prisoners had a walk. When they saw us, they completely or clung to the fence.

Watched in confusion. I don’t know – did you think that some Americans had been brought or that they would have new clothes in prison now? ” Reiniks shares his impressions, remembering that one prisoner, who, accompanied by security guards, pushed the cart with lunch, came to him and said: “Hello, Lauri! It is a great pleasure to see you with us! ” “It simply came to our notice then. Because I didn’t really know what to answer. It would be quite foolish to say that it is a great pleasure for me to be here, ”laughs Reiniks, saying that he has not denied the prisoners autographs.
