Laurie Filipetto set herself an incredible challenge. The 27-year-old will take part in the New York marathon on Sunday, even though she suffers from multiple sclerosis which was diagnosed six years ago. Since then, the mother of this little boy has followed a treatment that limits the symptoms, especially joint pain. In 2021, the citizen of Vendlincourt registered for this race to support the Swiss Multiple Sclerosis Society. To prepare for this, she runs several kilometers a week and has tested the distance of 42 kilometers in Zurich. For Laurie Filipetto, “it was the testing phase to see if I could do it and, for once, I was proud of myself, which is rare! » If she started running to lose weight before her illness was announced, she started this activity again to contain the pain: “I realized that running helped a lot with the pain, and also in my mind”. So the race pushes her to “move on”.
Sports and illness are not incompatible
MS symptoms appear in Laurie Filipetto as joint pain, sensitivity problems and fatigue. However, running helps to calm the disease according to the young woman who notes that the lack of activities strengthens her joints. “The first three kilometers hurt, but once it’s warm, it feels good,” said Ajoulote, who also practices a healthy lifestyle.
And after the marathon?
On Monday, this project born in 2021 will be finished. “What’s going to happen on Monday?” it’s really a complete void for me,” sighs Laurie Filipetto who is thinking of other challenges. First of all, to build a house that would fit her illness if it was going to be more of a hindrance to the young woman. The sportsman is also thinking about other races, why not Sierre-Zinal. /ncp
