Big smack for the footballers: this year’s Laureus Sports Awards are dominated by tennis. Rafael Nadal (34) is elected athlete, and the Japanese Naomi Osaka (23) is elected Sportswoman of the Year.
–
Nadal won the French Open, which was held in late summer, and thus drew level with Roger Federer (39) in terms of Grand Slam titles (20). Osaka won the US Open and was increasingly committed to the “Black Lives Matter” campaign.
–
The Laureus Awards are known as “Sports Oscars”. The nominees are chosen by 1,000 journalists from around the world. Then 69 legends of sport, who make up the jury, determine the winner in the respective categories.
–
Lionel Messi (33), who won this award last year, bows to Nadal and congratulates the Spaniard via video message. «Hi Rafa, I wanted to tell you that you are an example to everyone. Because of your hard work, your perseverance and the fact that you have been playing at your highest level for so many years. ”

Bayern clear away
In addition to the individual athletes, the team of the year was also honored at the digital award ceremony. Unsurprisingly, the winner is Bayern Munich. The Germans won everything that can be won last season.
–
«We have the most successful year in our club history behind us. This Laureus Award is now the crowning seventh trophy in a year that we will never forget », says CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge (65).
–
Lewis Hamilton (36) wins the “Advocate of the Year” category. The Formula 1 star receives the award for his constant fight against racism. Ex-FCB player Mohamed Salah (28) receives an award for his social commitment. 25-year-old Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is the newcomer of the year. (fmü)
