Stage on fire the dramaturgy was created in the context of real historical events – the background of the story reflects the events of 1937 and 1938, when the USSR carried out the so-called “national operations”, including the “Latvian operation”, as part of the Great Terror. Historical data says that more than 22,000 Latvians were arrested as part of these operations, and almost 17,000 of them were sentenced to death by firing squad. Also the Latvian Theater of Moscow Stage the troupe, which featured Maria Leiko, the acclaimed European theater and silent film actress, was a victim of these cruel statistics.
Stage on fire the date of the premiere was not chosen by chance – February 3 is the anniversary of the destruction of this theater troupe, because on February 3, 1938, its members were shot at the Butov landfill.
The director of the show, Laura Groza, says about the new production: “The show Stage on fire is the second part of the diptych created by me (the first – With ball shoes in the snow of Siberia), where together with our team we continue to shed light on the biggest nightmares of the last century, which unfortunately turned out to be a hard reality. Unlike the poignant deportation story, here the so-called “inconvenient Latvians” came to Moscow of their own free will to share their cultural space in a foreign country, unable to believe that this could turn out to be a crime.”
The performance Stage on fire will be bilingual – both Latvian and Russian will be heard from the stage. The ensemble of actors in this performance will be made up of actors from the Chekhov Theater: Ekaterina Frolova, Veronika Plotnikova, Shamil Hamatov, Yakov Rafalson, Alexander Malikov, Anatoliy Fechin, Konstantin Nikulin and others, as well as invited actors: Inese Kučinska, who will play the role of Maria Leiko, Mārtiņš Vilson and Ivar A hill.
The creative team of the show, led by Laura Grozas, consists of: Artūrs Dīcis (playwright), Mareunrol’s (costumes and scenography); Rūdolfs Dankfelds, Miķelis Putniņš (authors of original music), -8 (video artist) and Ainārs Pastars (lighting artist).
