Laundry machete attack claims the life of victim on Long Island

NEW YORK — A 58-year-old Long Island man died of his injuries after he was attacked with a machete at a local laundromat earlier this month, police said.

Michael Oliver, of Hempstead, was seriously injured in the pre-dawn attack on March 14 on the Laundry Palace in Merrick Road. Nassau County Police said he was struck multiple times with a machete after some sort of dispute with a man.

Oliver’s name was released Tuesday when authorities announced his death. A homeless person, Roberto Velásquez, was arrested in the case shortly after the attack on charges including attempted murder and assault.

It was not immediately clear if or when the charges would be updated, given developments in the case.

There was no information from Velásquez’s lawyer on Wednesday.
