On September 23, the European Parliament, the Council of the EU and the European Commission celebrated the launch of European Organic Day, an event that will now be held every year on the same date.
Announced in the action plan for the development of organic production launched as part of the “From farm to table”, this initiative aims to raise public awareness of organic production and promote the essential role played by the latter in the transition to sustainable food systems.
In order to stimulate consumption, the action plan provides for better information and communication on organic farming. In addition, to increase biological productivity, the common agricultural policy (PAC) remains an essential tool for the conversion to organic farming. Finally, the Commission will devote at least 30% of the budget earmarked for research and innovation actions in the fields of agriculture, forestry and rural areas to themes specific to the organic sector.
During the opening ceremony, the Commissioner in charge of agriculture, Janusz WOJCIECHOWSKI, recalled that the action plan aims to stimulate the production and consumption of organic products, in order to increase the agricultural area devoted to organic farming to 25% by 2030.
As a reminder, organic farming has many advantages such as a 30% higher level of biodiversity compared to “normally” cultivated land, a better level of well-being and a reduction in antibiotics for animals of this type. breeding. For farmers, growing organic produce provides them with a higher income.
