A total of 433,100 lats (616,200 euros) worth of lat banknotes were exchanged in the first half of this year at the Bank of Latvia, the Bank of Latvia announced.

Among them, 397,000 lats (564,900 euros) worth of lats banknotes and 36,100 lats (51,400 euros) worth of lats coins were exchanged in the first half of 2022.

At the end of June this year, 83.8 million lats or 119.3 million euros worth of lats coins and banknotes had not yet been exchanged.
Among them, 340.1 million lats coins had not yet been exchanged at the end of June, which in terms of weight, according to the Bank of Latvia, is 780 tons.
Of the coins, the most unexchanged were the coins of small denominations, namely one and two centimes – 239 million, while the number of unexchanged one-lata coins, including special single coins, was 24 million.
On the other hand, the most unexchanged banknotes at the end of June were 5 and 20 lat banknotes – 1.7 million and 753,000, respectively.
According to the data of the Bank of Latvia, by the end of June 2022, 40% of lat coins worth 29 million lats (41.3 million euros) and 96% of lats banknotes worth 942 million lats (1.34 billion euros) have been withdrawn from circulation. A total of 148.8 million coins and 47 million banknotes were withdrawn from circulation.
It has already been announced that at the end of 2013 and during 2014, 954 million lats (1.357 billion euros) worth of lats banknotes and coins were exchanged, in 2015 – five million lats (7.1 million euros), in 2016 – four million lats (5.7 million euros), in 2017 – worth about two million lats (2.8 million euros), in 2018 – worth 1.7 million lats (2.4 million euros), in 2019 – worth 1.6 million lats (2.28 million euros), in 2020 – worth 0.9 million lats (1.28 million euros), and in 2021 – worth 0.745 million lats (1.059 million euros).
Latvijas Banka will exchange lats banknotes for euros at the official exchange rate and without commission forever. Damaged lat banknotes and coins will also be exchanged for euros, as long as they meet the exchange conditions, for example, more than half of the banknote has survived, but the coins have not been deliberately damaged, including by making jewelry.
Latvia joined the euro zone on January 1, 2014.
