The Tallinn film festival “Black Nights” Ööde Filmifestival” is taking place this year for the 27th time (since 1997), in 2014 it was accredited as one of only 15 A-class film festivals and has grown into one of the largest film industry events in Northern Europe with five competition programs and for several satellite festivals.
In 2022, the Tallinn Festival was visited by approximately 80,000 moviegoers and 2,000 accredited guests from 75 countries.

Latvia is already traditionally the most widely represented in Tallinn”in the Baltic competition program“, for which Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian films are selected by international experts. Latvia is represented by five films in the Baltic competition this year, three of which are feature films – films already shown in Latvia, directed by Ilze Kungas-Melgailes “My freedom” (session no. 9.11.) un Aika Karapetjana “Shameless” (screenings from 12.11.), supplemented by the film of the director Aleksandar Hahn, who is distantly related to Latvia “Butterfly senior” (screenings from 14.11), whose participation in the Tallinn festival is the world premiere.

The Baltic competition also includes two documentary films from Latvia – the family story of Stanislav Tokalov, which has caused wide discussion in society.Everything will be fine” (screenings from 16.11.) and the documentary film jointly created by director Vitalij Manskas, who lives in Latvia, and director Yevhen Titarenko, who is fighting in Ukraine.Eastern Front” (screenings from 11.11). There are three screenings for each film in the festival program, the first of which is a meeting of the authors with the audience, questions and answers.

It should be noted that the film “Eastern Front” as an authentic testimony of the ongoing war in Ukraine is also included in a separate program of Ukrainian films; this year, the Tallinn Festival is also translating a part of its website into Ukrainian, believing that the involvement of the Ukrainian audience in the cultural environment of Estonia is a long-term project.

In the program of the Tallinn Film Festival, Latvia is also represented by short films – director Tīna Zariņa’s short film “Limo” is in the selection.Shorts Alternatives” and the animated short film “Misaligned” by the Polish director Marta Magnuszka, co-produced by the “Atom Art” studio, in the international in the short film competition.
“Market” of films and projects
Tallinn Festival Industry Events Section “Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event” this year starts on November 13, it is the region’s largest “market” for films and projects, where film industry professionals from all over the world meet regularly and many films start their international careers even before the premiere. Such “almost ready” films are selected for the program “Works in Progress“, which has a separate Baltic section, and this year, out of nine projects from three countries, four of them are works by Latvian authors – Dzintars Dreiberg’s “Network. The Birth of a TTT Legend” (studio “Kultfilma”), “Footprints” by Alice Zariņa (studio “Mima Films”), “Maria’s silence” (studio “Mistrus Media”) and “Forever Young” by Armandas Začas (studio “White Picture” ), all projects have previously been supported in various competitions of the National Cinema Center.
In the widely branched industry section of the Tallinn festival, there are several more programs for upcoming film projects in various stages, and Latvian films are also included in other events – director Matīss Kaža with his series project “Arizona Joe“selected for program”Midpoint Series Launch“, but director Reinis Kalviņš and producer Gints Grūbe are participating in the co-production project market “Co-production Market”, presenting the future feature film “In the clearing behind the forest“, and the co-production project of the studio “Film Angels Productions” with Estonia, the upcoming film of the director Jākas Kilmi “Dirt in Your Face“.
Young talents
The Tallinn Film Festival also pays special attention to various programs for the education and development of young talents, all of which are gathered under one roof under the name “Black Nights Discovery Campus“, and young Latvian professionals also participate in these programs. Acting talents gather in the initiative “Black Nights Stars“, for which an international jury has selected eight young but already proven actors. This year, Ritvars Logins, who is best known to Latvian cinemagoers as the lead actor in the multi-part film “Criminal Case for Beginners” (2022), has entered the selection of young talents; he and his colleagues will participate in various events, which are focused on enriching the experience and skills of young actors in order to pave the way for them in the international arena of the film industry.
In the framework of “Discovery Campus”, the young composer Katrīna Anna Verhoustinska, who participates in the program, will also gain valuable experience.Music Meets Film“, and cameraman Aleksandrs Vasks, who has become a participant in the “Frame Within a Frame” program.
Within the industry section of the Tallinn Film Festival, teaching staff and film education professionals of the National Film School of the Latvian Academy of Culture (LKA) will also work – on November 15 international conference on the specifics and perspectives of film education and further education in the Baltic States.
The industry event section of the Tallinn Film Festival ends on November 17, the last screenings for the audience – on November 19.
