This summer, young Latvians under the age of 25 had the opportunity to participate in the Latvian youth short film competition “1201RĪGA2023”, where they had to submit a film up to 3 minutes long and, together with the program of the short film festival “Manhattan Short”, get to Latvian cinema screens in eight major Latvian cities.

At the opening ceremony of the international short film festival “Manhattan Short” in Riga, the name of the winner was announced and a cash prize worth 100 euros was presented. The US Embassy representative and cultural attaché Keils Vagners, film director and festival representative in Latvia Stanislavs Tokalovs, as well as the winner of the youth short film competition “1201RĪGA2023” Bergmane and her team met on the same stage.

Participants of the Latvian youth short film competition “1201RĪGA2023” and young people interested in the film industry were invited to a special screening at the “K.Suns” cinema on October 8 to watch the best of the short films submitted and the world’s best short films from the “Manhattan Short” festival program. The young people could show their work to the jury, who are active in the film industry, namely Emīl Alpa and Rūta Znotiņa, and together they would discuss the results of the work done and the latest in the cinema industry.

For the second year in a row, the competition provides an opportunity for Latvian youth to show their works to a wider audience and motivates them to create their own original works. The short film of the winner was shown before every screening of the international short film festival “Manhattan Short”. This year, “Manhattan Short” had eight screenings in Riga, and a total of 24 screenings in Latvia. The festival has been organized in Latvia for the eleventh year and is attended by about 3,000 spectators every year.

Every viewer of “Manhattan Short” is a film critic. More than 100,000 cinema lovers all over the world unite in one week with the goal of watching and voting for one of the ten best short films in the world. The audience vote is sent to “Manhattan Short” headquarters, where votes from around the world are collected.
