With the aim of strengthening Latvia’s image and promoting the sense of belonging to the country among vehicle owners, the president of the Auto Association, member of the Saeima Andris Kulbergs (AS) is preparing amendments to legal acts so that the national emblem of the state registration number plates of Latvian vehicles will be included.
As Kulbergs pointed out, active consultations are currently underway with the Directorate of Road Traffic Safety and other institutions, because in addition to amendments to the law, the standard LVS 20:2009 “Vehicle State Registration Number Plates” should also be amended. These amendments will ensure that the new license plates meet all technical and visual standards.
The deputy notes that such an initiative follows Lithuania’s announcement of new vehicle license plates, which include the national coat of arms from October 1, and there are also similar examples in other European countries.
The existing license plates are functional, but they do not emphasize the identity of Latvia symbolically, says Kulbergs, emphasizing that the inclusion of the coat of arms in the license plates will be a strong incentive to promote national identity. The example of Lithuania has proven that such changes are an effective way to shape the citizenship of the population.
“We want Latvian drivers to be able to feel pride for their country when they see its symbol – the coat of arms – on their vehicles. Including such symbolism in everyday life is a way to promote a sense of national unity and belonging. It is also a way we can help to create recognition of Latvia outside the country’s borders. Thus, every trip by car becomes a small but significant expression of patriotism,” Kulbergs believes.
