In a remarkable display of dedication to national service,a group of Latvian Television (LTV) employees recently completed a grueling National Guard training programme. the initiative, launched earlier this year, saw several LTV staff members volunteer for the intensive course, demonstrating a commitment to both their professional roles and their countryS defense.
The training involved a demanding week-long field exercise, culminating in a challenging night operation and tactical march through arduous terrain. Participants faced various obstacles, testing their physical and mental resilience. The experience proved transformative for many.
“If I can do it at my age, than young guys have nothing to complain about,” said Valdis Timmermanis,an LTV director who participated in the training.
The commitment extended across various roles within LTV. Reinis Ošineks, an LTV journalist, shared his viewpoint on the challenges: “Some of them are already close to 60.If all Latvians had such determination through ‘I can’t’ and the pain pouring out…I was motivated by my colleagues, because I saw and knew that if they can do it, then I can do it too.”
The program wasn’t just about physical endurance. Una Nākuma, an assistant director at LTV, highlighted the importance of the experience: ”We care, we can and want to, we can do more than we think. This is the most crucial thing.”
Even those accustomed to the pressures of live television found the training demanding. Igors Staads, an LTV cameraman, reflected, “I think it’s easier to handle the camera, but I’m very glad that I passed this test.”
“this was one of the biggest challenges I’ve ever taken on in my life. And it’s so cool that it’s done,”
said Kristers Grobiņš, an LTV communications engineer, expressing his relief and satisfaction upon completion.
The initiative to establish a dedicated National Guard unit within LTV stemmed from a strategic decision made earlier this year. The goal is to enhance the organization’s security capabilities and ensure its employees are prepared to respond to potential crises.Gints Miķelsons, an LTV board member who also participated, emphasized the broader implications: “In this way, LTV plans to further strengthen its security capacity and power, in case of such a need, the colleagues themselves would be learned and able to defend their colleagues as well. I invite colleagues to join in the next calls. And let’s strengthen our joint ability to be safe.”
The graduates were evaluated throughout the training, and Una Nākuma was recognized for her exceptional performance, receiving a national flag in a ceremony celebrating their achievement.
