Latvian tennis team to play Federation Cup “play-off” games in February 2021 / Article / LSM.lv

The Latvian women’s tennis team will play the previously canceled Federation Cup qualifiers on February 5 and 6 next year, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) announced on Friday.

The agency LETA has already reported that on March 11, the ITF announced that due to the rapid spread of the “Covid-19” virus, the Federation Cup finals, as well as qualifying tournament games, in which the Latvian national team was scheduled to start in mid-April, have been postponed indefinitely.

The finals of the Federation Cup from 14 to 19 April were scheduled for the Laszlo Papa Arena in Budapest, but now the final has been postponed to 13-18 April next year, without changing the venue.

The competition this year is prevented by the difficulties caused by “Covid-19”, which makes it difficult to implement logistics and other organizational measures.

The “play-off” games, which were scheduled for April this year, will take place on February 5 and 6 next year. The Latvian national team will fight against India. In total, eight battles are expected in the “play-off” tournament.

Also, the games of the second group of America and Asia / Oceania, as well as the matches of the third group of Europe / Africa have been postponed indefinitely.

In 2022, the competition calendar is expected to return to previous tracks.

It has already been reported that at the beginning of February, Latvia, along with Alona Ostapenko and Anastasia Sevastov, gave up 2-3 home players in the United States and did not make it into the top 12 teams to start in the final.

One victory for the Latvian national team was won by Anastasia Sevastova, who caused Serena Williams the first loss in the Federation Cup since 1999. Williams had not previously lost 14 games in a row.

The Latvian athlete later received the award for the highest return.
