Latvian school children’s computer skills have scored high in an international survey

A similar situation was observed in other Latvian cities, however, the differences are not so sharp there, as the average performances in state gymnasiums elsewhere are not so high as Riga. The researchers call on the city of Riga to “really examine the resources available in schools” – both materially and in terms of the ability to attract good teachers.

“Knowing all this, it is completely clear why there is great competition for places in the city gymnasium and great competition for places in the Riga gymnasium,” the report says .

The European Union has set a goal that by 2030 the proportion of students in the eighth grade who do not have sufficient computer skills will be less than 15%. In Latvia, 37% of students have low performance in computer skills, similar to Finland and Hungary.

Among the EU member states, Romania has the highest proportion of students with low computer skills – 74% of eighth grade students. On the other hand, the lowest number of such students is in the Czech Republic – 28% of students.

About 2,700 eighth-grade students from Latvia participated in the survey, which took place in the spring of 2023. Latvia participated in the survey for the first time.

Scholars have demonstrated their information and communication technology skills, knowledge and abilities, as well as demonstrated algorithmic thinking by carrying out practical tasks. Teachers, school ICT coordinators and school principals were also invited to answer the survey questions.

Acting State Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science Inita Juhņeviča, evaluating the first results of the study, indicated several measures implemented to ensure infrastructure. For example, a project was implemented in which children from low-income families received computers. By May next year, it is planned to provide computers to general education teachers and vocational education students.

Also, a project was launched to create an integrated professional support system for educators. Internet access in all cities should also be considered.

“All the steps that have already been started will ensure that computer skills will improve, including those students who have lower skills, and we are sure of that,” Juhņeviča said this situation to journalists.
