This Saturday, April 3, at 10 pm, with the concert “ReTV”, the Latvian Radio Big Band together with vocalist Aija Vītoliņš and percussionist Andris Buiķis will open the third season of the concert series “In the Spotlight”.
The name of the program is “Feel the Gravel”, and it is a concert program specially created by Andris Buķis for the Latvian Radio Big Band and vocalist Aija Vītoliņa. “The project is very rich in harmonies, experimental and technically challenging, especially for the big band, but it does not deviate from the classical values of jazz and rhythmic music. Each composer has his own handwriting in creating compositions – for Andris they are definitely rhythmic and “grumpy” melodies, which are supposedly tied to a certain stage of music (often they are in the 80s), but do not express nostalgia. Often in his compositions he reflects such tendencies that other musicians talk about and notice only later, ”the concert organizers say. In describing his original works, Andris Buikis almost always uses the term “groove” in English. “Gru is a sense of rhythmic and melodic driving force, an extremely powerful element of musical expression, which also acts bodily, forcing the leg or moving with the pulsation of music,” is the explanation of this foreign word. It should be noted that the Latvian Radio Big Band will dedicate the first part of the concert to the recently deceased jazz legend Chik Korea, performing and interpreting such famous compositions as “Spain”, “La Fiesta”, “Got A Match” and others.
