Latvian presidential elections to be held on May 31 | Abroad

Elections of the President of Latvia are scheduled for May 31. The presidium of the Seimas of the neighboring country and the council of factions agreed on the date of the elections. According to local laws, there is a partial week in the first half of May for the official nomination of presidential candidates.

It is not yet known whether the incumbent Latvian leader Egils Levits will run. As for other candidates, there is a possibility that the Joint List (JL) will nominate entrepreneur Uldis Pilens, who was the JL candidate for prime minister in the elections, for the presidency. In addition, the deputy of the Saeima from the opposition faction “Latvia in the first place” Edmunds Zivtins said that now the ruling politicians are discussing among the possible successors of Levits the Executive Vice President of the European Commission, ex-Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis.

Candidates for the presidency of Latvia can only be nominated by deputies of the Saeima. Moreover, there must be at least five such deputies.
