As theater director Māris Vītols explained in the LTV program “Morning Panorama”, the theater does not change the previously planned repertoire, but adds five new performances to it, which means that a total of 14 premieres are expected on the stages of the National Theater this season.
Māris Vītols has spent a little more than four months as the head of the National Theatre. Looking back on what he has done, he said: “The moment has come when I could report to the public for what I have done. A lot has been done. We have prepared surprises, we want to surprise the whole society. [..] The season has started very successfully. If we imagine that the National Theater is a big sailing ship floating in the sea, then the worst thing on the sea is creative windlessness – when the sea is almost dead.
The National Theater has managed to catch the wind at the moment, there is creative unrest. [..] And at this moment, the director of the theater as the captain has the opportunity to slightly adjust the course of the theater.”
Ieva Struka, the deputy director for repertoire and artistic issues, revealed in a statement to the media: “Thinking about what is missing in the repertoire of the 105th season of the Latvian National Theater and what path to take by supplementing it, we chose two directions – firstly, to offer a work of world classics with respect for it, without disrupting , without rewriting and without abandoning the author’s idea, therefore Henrik Ibsen’s excellent drama “Hedda Gabler” will be made, which will be released under the title “Hedda Gabler” under the direction of Edmund Freiberg. Return”. In this performance, alongside the director Edmund Freiberg, part of the artists who for various reasons have left the theater’s staff ensemble in previous years will symbolically return to the stage of the National Theater, namely Madara Zviedre, Jēkabs Reinis, Ivars Puga and Đirts Liuziniks, but the roles will be also Lāsma Kugrēna, who played Heda in the previous interpretation of this play, and Daiga Kažociņa.
Secondly, we are looking for an opportunity to look at life affirmatively with the help of theater. Keeping this vector in mind, we will stage the humorous work “Shameless Old Men” by Anšlav Eglīš directed by Gat Šmit, in which, as the name suggests, the roles will be played by our old masters, while at the end of March we will return to the strong tradition of the National Theater – to look at what is happening in Latvia through the prism of humor , that’s why there will be a concert performance “Don’t laugh at all! – Theater day concert” in the style of a political cabaret, directed by Paul Timrots.
In the new hall, the new director Endīne Bērziņa will make her debut with the production of Margareta Perry’s play “Time for Paradise”, which will play on the naivety of people, getting involved in financial pyramids in the hope of happiness and wealth. But in the Actors’ Hall already on the evening of December 6, Kaspar Rolštein’s mono-opera “#DiToo” with Dita Lūriņas in the title role will have its premiere at the Latvian National Theater.” The mono-opera “#DiToo” was created during the pandemic and was performed in the garden of von Strick’s villa, but now it will start living on the stage of the National Theater .

Commenting on the habits of the National Theater audience, Māris Vītols noted in “Morning Panorama” that this season the theater halls are filling up better than the previous season, and predicted that the number of viewers will exceed 100,000 in 2023. “We are aiming even higher,” Vītols pointed out.
“We want to become the most popular and visited theater in Latvia, that’s why all these news and additions to the season.”
In the future, the National Theater will also offer “Spectator Cards”, the owners of which will be able to purchase tickets at a discount.
