In Finland, a criminal case has been initiated against the Latvian national team because of the bookmaker’s advertising.
According to Iltalehti, the logo of the Estonian bookmaker Olybet was on the sweaters of the Latvian team during the 2023 World Cup, which was held in Riga and Finnish Tampere.
The Latvian national team played the semi-finals and the bronze medal match in Tampere.
Under Finnish law, only Veikkaus can advertise gambling in mainland Finland. It is forbidden to advertise foreign gambling.
“The team had advertising that was not domestic. Someone felt that the police should investigate a possible crime. The police are registering the case and starting a preliminary investigation,” said Police Commissioner Arto Partanen.
It is noted that on the sweaters of the Latvian team under the logo of the bookmaker’s office it is written “sports bar” (sports bar). The Olybet office has a restaurant with the same name in Tallinn.
The Latvian national team defeated the USA (4:3 OT) in the match for 3rd place in the 2023 World Cup and won the bronze medal. The team won a medal at the Ice Hockey World Championship for the first time in history.
