Last night in the National Hockey League (NHL) the first test matches were played by Latvian goalkeepers Elvis Merzlikin and Arthur Shilov. The Columbus Blue Jackets represented by Merzlikin beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in extra time, while Shilov and the Vancouver Canucks capitulated to the Calgary Flames 0-10.
“Blue Jackets” and “Penguins” played the second game within one day – “Penguins” celebrated a 3:2 victory over the “bulls” in the first duel. In the application for the second match, a place was also reserved for Merzlikin, who started in the starting line-up. The Latvian puck catcher played the first two periods and made 18 of 21 or 85.7% shots. At the beginning of the third period, the goalkeeper of the “Blue Jackets” farm club, the Czech Pavel Chajan, was in goal, and he managed all eight shots in the regular time and extra time.
In the Columbus team, Carson Mayer stood out with two goals, Alexander Texier also had an accurate shot, but the winner goals for Jordan Duma. The goals of Austin Wagner, Sam Poulin and Jonathan Gruder did not save the “Penguins” from the loss.

Meanwhile, Shilov and the Canucks, who played without Teodor Blüger, had to suffer a very heavy defeat. The Calgary team, which, compared to Vancouver, used much more experienced NHL players, showed its superiority from the first minutes – in the first period, Shilova scored four pucks, and in the second third, the Latvian was beaten three more times.
After the seventh “Flames” goal, Shilov was replaced – the Latvian finished the game with 11 saved shots, or 61.1%. Zek Savchenko went on the field instead of him, who managed five of eight shots (62.5%) in the allotted time. In the Calgary team, Matt Coronato stood out with a hat-trick, two goals for Jonathan Huberdeau, three assists for both Dillon Dub and Adam Ruzicka, and 1+2 for Noah Henifin and Nazem Kadri.
The Canucks’ next game is scheduled for Thursday night against the Edmonton Oilers.
Also successful was the Buffalo Sabres, who beat the Washington Capitals 4-3 in the shootout on the road. Buffalo did not play for the team Zemgus Girgensons.
