On May 16, 2023, in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland, Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Samveli Mirzojan (Ararat Samveli Mirzoyan). During the meeting the minister informed about the tasks and priorities of Latvia’s presidency in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, as well as listened to Armenia’s vision on the development of the situation in Karabakh and the peace talks with Azerbaijan. E. Rinkēvičs described the relations between Latvia and Armenia as good and expressed his readiness to host the political consultations of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs in Riga on June 5 and 6 this year.

The minister expressed confidence that a safe and prosperous South Caucasus region is in the interests of Latvia and the European Union. For this purpose, it is essential to normalize relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia emphasized that Russia’s military attack on Ukraine is a violation of international law and has a long-lasting, negative impact politically, economically, both regionally and globally. Latvia considers it a fundamental risk to its vital national interests.
