Latvian Foreign Minister Krišjānis Kariņš on Private Flights Scandal and Transparency

Latvian Foreign Minister Krišjānis Kariņš explains in the TV24 program “Personality of the Day with Velta Puriņa” whether he would act differently today in connection with the scandal by using private flights.

Kariņš explains, “At that time I asked questions, is this intended? Is it in the budget? It was explained to me that yes.” Accordingly, the minister did not ask any more questions. Krišjānis Kariņš explains that, looking through today’s eyes, he should have asked more questions.

However, he calls to look at this situation from the practical side. It was a time when many places had to be reached, the time of Covid-19, when flights were still limited. Most of the flights have now been restored, but this was not the case at the time.

“When it was necessary to get somewhere, my office and the chancellery together simply look at how to do it more quickly and better. Mainly commercial flights, but there are also a certain number of special flights.”

Kariņš expresses the opinion that it is important to preserve the possibility to use such a service for the President, the head of the government and perhaps another official as needed. What should be done differently – the following information should be made public immediately: “How much? Where? Why? And so on, so that questions or suspicions do not accumulate in the future,” says Foreign Minister Krišjānis Kariņš.

It has already been announced that the special flights made by the delegations led by Kariņas during the time of the Prime Minister, which have earned some public criticism, from September 2021 to September 2023 cost 613,830 euros from the state budget according to the information gathered by the State Chancellery.
