The Nordic Film Days will be held in the German city of Lübeck at the beginning of November, where five Latvian films have been selected in various programs, and the director Armands Začs has been selected for the young talent platform “Future North”, according to the representative of the National Cinema Center, Agnese Zapāne.
In Lübeck, which is located in Northern Germany, in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, the history of the film festival goes back to 1956, when the Lübeck Film Club was founded. This year, the event plans to show approximately 180 films in 250 public screenings, more than half of the festival program will also be available online in Germany.
Latvian films are included in four different sections of the festival, and director Kristīne Briede’s film “Svārstības” has been selected for the documentary competition, which will be screened in two screenings and supplemented with a separate discussion on the issues raised by the film.
The short film competition includes the film “Can’t Help Myself” by the young director Anna Ansone with Elina Vaska-Boteri in the lead role, while in the children’s and youth film section Latvia is represented by the animation short film “Chuchi, chuchi” by director Māras Lininas and the youth drama “Neona pavasaris” by Matīs Kaža. .
A separate section “Retrospectiva” in Lübeck is created in cooperation with the film archives of European countries and shows restored films from the golden funds of the heritage of cinema classics, this year among the films of 17 different countries is the black and white film “Motorcycle Summer” by Latvian director Ulda Braun, which has been restored in the Latvian National Archive’s National Cinema Photographic Document in the digitization and restoration program of the archive.
In parallel with the film screenings intended for the public, the “Lübeck Meetings” section of film industry events is also organized in Lübeck, and a new initiative “Future North” was founded there this year – an opportunity for representatives from the Nordic and Baltic countries to come to the center of attention of the European film industry, present their new projects and receive expert recommendations. to accumulate experience and contacts in the industry. Among the seven talents from seven countries, the director Začs, who is currently filming his debut feature film “Eternally Young”, was also chosen.
At the Lübeck festival, several juries work in different programs, evaluating films and awarding a total of 12 prizes. One of them is the Baltic Film Award, the recipient of which is determined by representatives of Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian film institutions. The voice of Latvia in this year’s jury is Inga Blese, head of the film production department of the National Cinema Center and feature film expert.
