Latvian athlete wins international sports competition for the blind for the first time / Raksts

Ovsyanikov won the two-day competition in eight games, beating the experienced polo Christian Kisiel in the last tense four-set match.

Shoudong is a unique sports game for the blind and partially sighted – a sport similar to table tennis and air hockey, which is practiced all over the world.

  • This show is played by two participants on a special competition table equipped with two gates or goal holes at the ends of the table.
  • The object of the game is to hit the ball into the opponent’s goal with a special racket, passing it over the table surface under the central screen without hitting the side walls. Each player serves twice in a row.
  • The player receives two points for each ball hit, and one point if the opponent throws the ball into the court, hits the ball from the court, or touches the ball with anything other than a racket.


Ovsjanikov was praised by LNSS President Ugis Skuja for his success, explaining that the athlete’s performance is constantly improving.

In the ladies’ competition, when starting for the first time in a high-level competition, Elīze Strazdiņa won the 13th place. Diāna Dubrovska, as the youngest participant in the women’s tournament, was also able to rank in the strongest sixteen, while Imants Elstiņš, Mārtiņš Ailis and Artūrs Korjaks, competing with strong competitors, were able to show resistance and felt the taste of several victories phase.

Vilnius hosted one of the International Federation of the Blind’s (IBSA) major points tournaments in the world, with blind and visually impaired athletes from France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. 58 participants from 11 countries took part.

Shaudun is the most popular sport for the blind and partially sighted in Latvia, gathering not only a large group of participants in the tournaments organized by the LNSS, but also many domestic and even foreign spectators in live broadcasts organized by the LNSS.
