Sergejevs started the competition on Tuesday, when he got 624 points in the qualification, which gave him 29th place. In the elimination bouts, he defeated the UAE athlete Khalif Alkabi 6-0 in the first round, with the competition continuing on Sunday with the second round.
In that, Sergeev defeated the Czech Lukash Fritsch 6-4, followed by a 6-2 victory over Riccardo Alfano, followed by a 6-2 victory over Germany’s Leon Zemella in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, the Latvian archer defeated Ukraine’s Bohdan Iļyin with 6-2, but in the semi-finals, the Frenchman Batist Adī was beaten 6-5 in a shootout.
In the final, Sergeev competed with South Korean archer Chuljun Choi. In the first set, both had the same number of points (1-1), but in the second Sergeev hit all three arrows in the top ten and achieved 3-1. The third set was won by Choi, who tied the game (3-3), but in the next both archers scored the same number of points again (4-4).
The next set, in which two more points would also give the championship title, both archers started with two accurate hits each – 20:20. With the third arrow, Choi scored only eight points, but Sergeev hit ten again and made it 6-4, becoming the world champion.
86 archers competed in this competition.
In the U-21 and U-18 groups, Madara Spāģe, Estere Ukstiņa, Emīlija Garde and Lija Viktorija Seibute took shared 57th places.
The World Championship in Ireland will end on Sunday.
